A Walk inside Taj Silk Saree: How a Banarasi Saree is made?

Varanasi is more than a destination; it's an emotion, a profound experience that resonates with the soul. The city's allure lies in its ability to embrace all, transforming strangers into cherished guests within its benevolent embrace. The pride of being "Banarasi" pulses through its residents, a testament to the city's unique spirit, where even the most chaotic traffic fades into insignificance. The Ganges, with its string of sacred ghats, adds a layer of serendipity, flowing northwards, a marvel attributed to the city's sanctity. Varanasi, one of the world's oldest living cities, is a melting pot of cultures, religions, and traditions, where the enigmatic dance of life and death is celebrated along its ancient ghats. It is here that the Ganga Aarti illuminates the evenings, and scholars and sadhus have sought wisdom for millennia. Yet, beyond the grand rituals, every alleyway in Banaras whispers stories, and today, we'll unravel the tale of its weavers.

The Weaver's Song: Threads of Resilience:

There is a palpable energy in Varanasi, a vibrant spirit that finds its most tangible expression in the weaving of Banarasi sarees. These artisans, creators of the world-renowned Banarasi silk, known for its exquisite beauty and intricate motifs, often live amidst humble circumstances, reminding us that life's true treasures are found in its simple joys. The city's unique harmony is further underscored by the symphony of temple bells, chanting hymns, and the azaan from nearby mosques. The weaving community, a beautiful mosaic of Hindu and Muslim artisans, works in seamless unity, transcending religious boundaries.

This captivating tableau of the weaving community inspired a journey into the heart of a Bunkar (weaver) neighborhood. To understand the intricate process of Banarasi saree weaving, we embarked on a tour with Abhishek, "the man behind the lenses," Abdul, a young weaver and our invaluable guide, and myself, eager to share this story.

A Journey Through the Lanes: Unraveling the Weave:

On a bright, typical Varanasi day, we convened at our meeting point. As anyone familiar with Varanasi knows, its narrow streets are legendary. As someone once aptly put, "If you think Indian street scenes are chaotic, Varanasi is a whole other level." Given the labyrinthine lanes, a car was impractical, leading us to opt for motorbikes, with Abdul gracefully navigating on his bicycle.

Abdul began to illuminate the weaving process, explaining that the fundamental element of any fabric, including sarees, is yarn—a continuous strand of intertwined fibers. These yarns are meticulously arranged to form fabric through a process known as weaving, which is executed on a loom.

SELECTION AND DYEING OF YARN

The heart of a Banarasi saree lies in its yarn, predominantly silk, sourced in a spectrum of qualities to meet the diverse needs of the craft.

Dyeing the Threads of Dreams:

Raw yarns, procured from the market, are transformed into vibrant hues through the dyer's skilled hands. We ventured to the dyer's workshop, a kaleidoscope of colors that instantly ignited our curiosity. A large pan of water simmered, awaiting its transformation. The dyer meticulously added color, gauging the temperature with practiced precision. Meanwhile, two assistants diligently arranged raw yarn hanks onto steel rods.

Once the water reached the desired heat, the yarn hanks were immersed, then lifted, and rotated with rhythmic precision, ensuring every fiber absorbed the rich color evenly. This dance of dipping and turning continued until the yarn achieved the perfect shade.

Finally, when the yarn was imbued with the desired color, the hanks were lifted and twisted, expelling excess water. The vibrant strands were then stretched and left to bask in the sun, drying into the threads that would weave stories of Banaras.

THE ART OF REELING

With the yarn now sun-kissed and dry, the next stage was reeling. Abdul led us to the heart of this process, where intricate yarn hanks were meticulously transformed into single, smoothly wound threads on small reels. Our eyes were immediately drawn to a colossal, manually operated hexagonal prism – the reeling machine.

This impressive structure spun, expertly converting the tangled yarn hanks into neat cones and reels. The operator deftly fed the yarn through one end, and from the other, a single, flawless thread emerged, winding precisely onto the reels and cones.

These meticulously prepared reels now serve as the foundation for the subsequent stages: warping and filling the shuttle for the weft.

THE ART OF DESIGN: WEAVING VISIONS

Banarasi sarees are celebrated worldwide for their exquisite designs, a testament to the artistry that breathes life into these woven masterpieces. Abdul led us to the heart of this creative process, a place where visions were transformed into tangible patterns.

From Sketch to Silk: Crafting the Blueprint

We parked our vehicles along the narrow street, stepping into a modest dwelling where, under the dim glow of a single bulb, an elderly artisan and his young apprentices meticulously sketched intricate designs onto large sheets of paper. The air was thick with concentration, as each stroke of their pencils brought the envisioned patterns closer to reality.

TRANSFERRING VISION: THE GRAPH PAPER GRID (LIKHAI)

As we engaged in conversation, they revealed that these hand-drawn designs were meticulously transferred onto graph paper, a process known locally as 'Likhai.

THE ART OF THE JACQUARD: PUNCHING THE PATTERNS (NAKSHA PATTAS)

"The designs meticulously plotted on the graph paper serve as a blueprint for creating the intricate patterns on the loom. These designs are then transferred onto sturdy cardboard stencils, where precise holes are hand-punched, a process that forms the essential Jacquard cards, known locally as 'Naksha Pattas.

THE JACQUARD'S ROLE: WEAVING PATTERNS ONTO FABRIC

"The Jacquard cards, or 'Naksha Pattas,' serve as the key to translating intricate designs onto the fabric. Our guide explained that these cards are indispensable, enabling the creation of a vast array of patterns, from delicate floral motifs to elaborate royal designs and beyond.

He concluded by emphasizing the critical role of these stencils in the weaving process. A single Banarasi saree may require numerous Jacquard cards, with the complexity of the design directly correlating to the number of stencils used. The more intricate the pattern, the greater the number of 'Naksha Pattas' required."

THE FINAL ACT: WARP, WEFT, AND THE JACQUARD'S DANCE

"The culmination of the Banarasi saree's creation lies in the intricate dance of warp and weft, where threads intertwine to form the fabric, guided by the designs encoded within the Jacquard cards.

Abdul then demonstrated the warp and weft process, explaining that the warp, or 'tana,' consists of the longitudinal threads stretched along the loom, while the weft, or 'bana,' comprises the latitudinal threads woven across them. With the Jacquard cards meticulously fixed to the loom, the shuttle moves back and forth, carrying the weft threads, while the cards dictate the precise pattern, weaving the desired design into the fabric. Thus, the magic of a Banarasi saree is born."
